alterswerk is an initiative by artists for a new way of growing old and stands for the desire for solidarity, a sense of belonging and social resonance into old age in the togetherness of the generations.
We develop alternative concepts for a self-determined old age.

Save the Date: our aktion°1 will take place from March 15 – 17. A weekend of art, information, talks and workshops. We will be showing works on paper by artists who support our initiative, and there will be a series of talks to present innovative initiatives, projects and organizations with their creators. aktion °1 takes place in the rooms of the house PROJECT KUMI 13. The exact program comes with the invitation.

We work cooperatively and organize ourselves into information teams on age-related topics of our choice.The knowledge acquired is made available to all members of the association.
alterswerk creates a space in which social, ecological and economic solutions are networked and bundled. We network nationally in order to think creatively about models of ageing and to facilitate learning from each other, and we work regionally with local partners from science, business, politics and the arts.
We convey positive images of old age and campaign against social inequality in old age. We publicize our cause through exhibitions and events with artists from the visual arts, music, performing arts, literature and architecture.
Just as individual works of art depict social processes, set them in motion and anticipate the future, with alterswerk we are looking for solutions for the future of old age and the associated questions of human dignity, solidarity, social justice, ecological sustainability, transparency, co-determination, profitability and technical feasibility in order to build the alterswerk for all of us.

PROJECT IDEA alterswerk: The slogan „Be creative!“ applies not only to artists‘ own work, but to the entire way of life and livelihood of most artists. In Germany, only a small minority can make a living from actual art, i.e. selling works of art. Almost four-fifths of visual artists only earn up to 10,000 euros a year from sales. The income of female artists is even lower than that of male artists. Nevertheless, only a very small proportion (3.9 per cent) receive Hartz IV benefits. This shows that despite the often precarious work situation, artists are at the same time life artists. However, they have very little leeway to proactively address old-age provision and financial security in retirement and with the increasingly likely consequence that many artists will be dependent on basic security in old age. These negative consequences of creative work are currently largely individualised in social discourse and appear as a personal problem. It is not only among artists that there is a gap between the personal possibilities for ageing with dignity and the actual experience of being old in social reality, and it is currently up to each individual to find a solution. All in all, the models for age issues of the present are only of limited use for our complex future. Artists have the creative power to rethink the world. The aim is to develop a concept for a solidary, socially and economically relevant entrepreneurial strategy in order to realise an exemplary place for dignified, socially active ageing in cooperation between the generations. For what does it mean for our European understanding of democracy, human dignity, solidarity and social justice if, in the ageing societies of the future, ageing is a purely personal risk with precarious living conditions, uncertain perspectives and unclear security conditions?
